David Thompson, Prime Minister of Barbados (1961-2010)

9th November 2010 by , | No Comments

Last week I had the sad duty of representing New Zealand at the funeral of the Prime Minister of Barbados, David Thompson, who died in office in late October. The funeral itself was held at Kensington Oval, the international cricket ground in Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados.

The eulogies understandably focussed on a life cut short (Mr Thompson was 48), the loss to the nation of a dynamic leader and to his family, including his three young daughters. It was a moving service, with heavy attendance by leaders from the region. Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, of Jamaica, made a particularly moving tribute on behalf of the Caribbean Community.
